How to Apply for a Permit

Becoming a Pedicab Driver is Easy!

In order to start pedicabbing, you'll need a few documents before you actually get the license. Yes, you have to have a pedicab license -- technically, a chauffeur's permit -- from the City of Austin's Ground Transportation Dept.

Use Google Maps to locate the following locations!

Map to getting permit

First, go to the D.P.S. website to apply for your driving records and ask for option 3A. It costs $12. (For an extra cost, you can ask for expedited service.) You can no longer apply for your driving records at the D.P.S. office, where you have to go to get your criminal records. The D.P.S. office is located at 108 Denson (at intersection of Airport Blvd. and Denson Dr.) to get your certified criminal history, $25.

Second, call Stevie at 512.930.8791 or Austin at 512.934.2841 or email us so you can fill out an application. You'll need those driving and criminal records.

Third, get your application notarized. You can usually get a free notarization from your bank, but if not, then it's generally only $4-7, and there's a passport processing place next door to the last place you need to go to complete this process.

In order to get your license, bring your notarized application, driving record, and criminal record to Ground Transportation office at 1111 Rio Grande (at corner of 12th and Rio Grande, caddy corner from ACC) to take the City of Austin chauffeur permit test. Don't worry, it's easy to pass, and it's only $10.

Total cost for documents: around $50.

Come back to the HOT Pedicab shop at Red River and Willow, at the backside of horse carriage stables located at 96 Red River. Go down Willow and enter the driveway on the right, before Chain Drive. Call if you need directions, and we'll get you on a pedicab so you can pay off the cost of the documents in the first few hours of work!
